The text begins “ ’Twas in the moon of wintertime, when all the birds had fled. ” The second tune is a melody from “Kentucky Harmony” from 1816 entitled O Holy City, Seen of John and speaks of the “city where Christ, the Lamb, doth reign. ” The third melody is a Chinese folk melody Golden Breaks the Dawn where “comes the eastern sun like a man of brawn. ” It is written in the pentatonic major scale. The last tune is a Native American melody titled Dakota titled Many and Great, O God, Are Thy Things and continues praising the various elements of nature.
