A switchback is a curve in a mountain road where travel abruptly “switches” in the opposite direction, a necessary manuever for climbing some mountain passes. Robert S. Frost cleverly uses one motif for these “switchbacks” and another for the “straightaways” before a presto ending depicts the end of the journey - and the traveler's sigh of relief.
